Written and published in 1981 by James Doolin, this slim volumn--22 pages-is the quintessential guide to the varieties of tickets offered at the exposition. It is quintessential because it is, as far as we know, the only book devoted exclusively to the subject in existence. In it you will find the "story" behind the popular Souvenir Portrait passes, including total numbers issued, in what sequence, with lowest and highest serial numbers issued. Too are detailed all the tickets that allowed visitors to the special venues available once inside. There are transportation and ride tickets, tickets admitting the bearer to any number of small "villages" reflecting cultures from around the globe, Lapland to Java. With the right ticket you could learn about Colorado gold mining, or California Ostrich farming. Even the varieties of "token" tickets are listed, allowing entry to any number of midway restaurants and galleries. Illustrations of the tickets are not included , but all are given a "rarity" rating by the author, so you'll know that if you get a chance to obtain one of the certificate-sized tickets issued with a ride on the gigantic "wheel" of bridge builder George Ferris, you'd better take it. The swell of tickets and ticket types was a reflection of the imagination and span of the exposition itself, and for anyone who collects them, this is the "must have" guide. And they are not that easy to find. $89.00, plus $4 S/H. |

Like James Doolin with the exposition tickets, author Nathen Eglit categorized the hundreds of medals and medallions presented and handed out or sold at the expsition. Without doubt one of the most impressive, this is the Presidents Medal, Eglit #35a. . Made of white metal, it's a little over 2" in diameter. The obverse features a high relief side view of Columbus encircled by a wreath, and the reverse sports tiny--4x8mm--busts of the presidents from Washington, seen in center, through Benjamin Harrison. Each of the diminutive noggins includes their name beneath, clearly seen with a glass. Chester Authur, zoomed below, is seen at about 6:35 o'clock on the medal.. No major distractions, but some even wear, a little uneven color and a rim bump or two.One of the most collectible medals struck for the fair. $89.00, plus $5 S/H. |
